Winter Swim Team FAQ

Do I have to be a good swimmer to join the team?
All you need to join the LHY winter swim team is be able to make it one length of the pool! Swimmers will progress throughout the season and all four competitive strokes will be introduced.

Do I need to be a member of the Lock Haven YMCA to be on the team?
Yes, to be on the Loggerhead Winter Swim Team a swimmer must be a member of the Lock Haven YMCA. This is a national rule established by the YMCA of the USA. The Loggerheads compete in the Central PA YMCA Swim League and the league is closed to just YMCA competition.

Who will be coaching the winter swim team?
Joel Blesh will be the head coach of the Lock Haven Loggerheads, along with some very talented assistants. Their bios will be posted on the website.

Do I have to buy a team suit?
A team suit is not required for participation in swim meets. (But they do look pretty cool)  We have price packages that include a suit and a package that does not include one.

Where can I get team merchandise?
Team Merchandise will be available at the front desk of the Lock Haven YMCA. When merchandise is finalized, information will be sent out on this website as well as email letting everyone know what is available and how much everything is.

Are meets held every weekend?
Meets are NOT held every weekend. The season runs from November-March with there generally being 2 meets per month. Swimmers are not required to attend any meet, but meet participation is encouraged. Please just let Coach Joel know a few days prior to the meet if you will not be attending.

How does the team communicate to parents?
We use multiple forms of communication on the Loggerhead Swim Team. The team has a subscription to the “one call” service that places a call with every parent on the swim team as well as an email list that coach Joel will use to send important messages to the team. The team also uses this website (http://www.loggerheadswim.com/) as well as a facebook group. (http://www.facebook.com/Loggerheadswim)

Hard copies of important information (schedules, championship packets…etc) can be found on the bulletin board right outside of Coach Joel’s office. There will also be the occasional email from the team Parent Association.

What if school is canceled?
If school is canceled due to weather, practice will also be canceled.

How many practices does my son or daughter have to attend?
Practice is not required to be on the Loggerhead Swim Team. Though, it is important to note that there is a direct correlation between practice and improvement at all ages.

Swimmers that are in the Age Group level should shoot to attend 3-4 days per week

Swimmers that are in the Pre-Senior group should try to make 4-5 days of practice.

Senior swimmers should try to make all practices offered per week.

Do I have to help out at swim meets?
Parents are encouraged to help out at swim meets and become involved with the parent association. This organization can not run without a great parent group. Please remember, if you are brand new to swimming, you will not be asked to be the head official of the meet. But, every meet needs timers, and the more we have the more we can switch out and give others a break. There is also a concession stand that is a big fundraiser for the association. If you have questions about the parent association, please contact our President: Jim Tomalonis at 570-660-1329 or cedar-springs@comcast.net.

How do you decide relays when there are more than four kids in an age group?
If an age group has more than 4 swimmers, relays are determined by putting together the fastest four times in the events necessary to make the fastest relay. Pre season time trials will be held November 8th AND November 15th . Please make sure your swimmer is at one of these time trial meets so that way they can have times. Coach Joel will also automatically keep times from the CM high school meets and also Haven Area Aquatic Club meets as well.

I would like to swim YMCA, but train elsewhere, is that okay?
Absolutely. Many swimmers train elsewhere and participate with a YMCA team when they want to take part in the local competitions that the Loggerhead YMCA team has to offer. An example of this would be a swimmer getting extra training through the local Haven Area Aquatic Club at Lock Haven University. Another example would be swimmers that are part of a different high school that still want to participate in the YMCA team.

Please let Coach Joel know of your unique situation and he will be more than willing to work with you!

Is my child good enough to swim in the CPYSL Championships?
The CPYSL Championship meet is for EVERY swimmer in the league. There are no qualifying standard times, and the only requirement is that swimmers participate in two closed YMCA competitions, so every swimmer is more than welcome to participate. This meet is the only meet of the year (aside from other invitational meets) that gives out ribbons and awards. Your child will also get a super awesome green cap that they can only get for being on the championship team.

What is the Pentathlon?
The Pentathlon is the final meet of the season for swimmers that have not made the qualifying times for Districts. This event has swimmers participate in all four events and then an individual medley. This is our largest annual fundraiser, so it is important that we have a great showing at the meet as well as some great parent help. This is another meet in which swimmers can get ribbons, medals and trophies.

Any other questions? Contact Coach Joel: joelblesh@gmail.com

Ice Cream Social Rescheduled

We originally decided that we would have our ice cream social tonight because it would not interfere with the amazing, once in a lifetime Little League schedule....Wrong.

Tonight there will be a parade in Lock Haven welcoming the Keystone boys in blue at 6:30, and we have decided that it might be best to not compete with that. We will reschedule for Tuesday August 30th at the same time: 6:00pm. Thank you all for your understanding on short notice. See you all Tuesday!

Swim Clinic with Division I Head Coach David Sheets

The Lock Haven Area YMCA will host a two day swim clinic with area native and current Duquesne head coach David Sheets. Sheets’ Division I program has had tremendous success in and out of the water in his ten years in Pittsburgh, breaking every established school record and having multiple conference champions along with 11 swimmers with NCAA “B” qualifying Standards.  Sheets attended Clarion University where he was a 20 time NCAA Division II All-American.
Assisting Sheets will be his wife Christina who as an assistant coach with Clarion University has led the team to PSAC Championships and multiple top 5 finishes at the Division II NCAA Championship meet. She has many years of experience working with age group swimmers from the very popular Clarion University Swimming Camp. Christina also attended Clarion University where she was a 28 time NCAA Division II All-American and 5 time National Champion.
The clinic will run Saturday September 17th from 9am to 5pm for swimmers age 11 and over. Swimmers 10 and under will be Sunday, September 18th from 9am-5pm. Swimmers must be able to do all four competitive strokes.  The clinic will cover stroke mechanics, drills, starts, and turns. Cost is $60 per swimmer and much of the money raised will be a fundraiser for the swim team boosters. For more information call Loggerhead Head Coach Joel Blesh at the Lock Haven YMCA at 570-748-6727. Please remember that space is limited in this exciting clinic!

Summer Banquet

Our summer swim team banquet will be be next Friday, August 26th 2011 at 6:00pm. The banquet will be at the Mill Hall park located right next to the pool. The summer banquet has traditionally been an ice cream social, so some donations of your child's favorite toppings will be accepted!

Last Day of Clinic is a Game Day!

Today was our final day for the LHY Spring Swim Clinic. This has been a great time and I send out a special thanks to everyone who came out to it. Thanks again to Coach Jade (I hope you're having a great summer!) And Coach Amanda, who we are very happy to add to our awesome coaching staff.

I promised the kids on Tuesday that we would finish it out with a game day. The kids took part in some pretty competitive water polo games and then had a different variation of an old favorite in sharks and minnows. We finished it out with a free swim. I'm very excited to get the summer season started, and so are the kids. See y'all June 1st!

This Used to NOT be a Field

This one hundred yard field in Woolrich used to be special. This was the home of the Woolrich outdoor pool, and is where I learned to swim as a kid.

It seems so eerie to see the place like this. I can almost imagine the chain link fence surrounding it and the bath house standing on the right side. Anyone remember the giant game of checkers?

The point is, this is no longer a place where children learn to swim safely. This is a field. This is the future of the community pool at Mill Hall if we let it become this way, a field where the ghosts of memories of 40 years of kids having fun while playing in a safe environment.

Easter Relay Practice

We've had a GREAT clinic thus far, so with us just being over halfway through, I decided today would be a great day for some fun.

We all know and love that swimming is about individual competition, but when teams come together and support each other, that's when magic happens. We did a lot of goofy, off the wall relays including a relay where they had to keep Easter eggs above the water and another one where they had to pass noodles off to one another. We also had a few kicking relays (see guys, its important to work on kicking everyday so you can win the relays!)

I couldn't be happier with the way this clinic is going! Go Loggerheads!

Summer Swim Team In Depth!

Right now we are getting a lot of questions concerning what is going on with the team for the summertime. I just wanted to pass along some information to give you what we currently know.

The team this year will register through the Lock Haven Area YMCA. You sign up and register for the team there. This will be run as a program at the YMCA. Here are the prices.

Member: $55

Potential Member: $70

Registrations will be done differently than in the past with you just coming up to the front desk and registering like a program. If you come in and register between 6pm-8pm on May 11th or May 25th (both are Wednesdays) there will be a $5 discount.

Carol and Joel will act as co-head coaches for the team. We will have several helpful assistants and continue to work towards not only helping the kids swim faster, but also assist them in building a foundation of stroke technique for all four competitive strokes.

Practice will begin June 1st at the Lock Haven YMCA. We will have practice here until school ends, and a schedule will be emailed and posted to the blog. If the Mill Hall pool opens, we will use their pool for practice for 11 and over swimmers and meets. If the pool project is going on, we will have practice at the YMCA each night and have our meets on the road. This is the option that we’re all hoping for, because that means the pool will be repaired and we’ll have a home for the summertime for years to come!

We will be updating the blog with summer information as it becomes available!

Swimmers Celebrate GREAT Season With Banquet!

The Loggerheads finished out a great season with some great food and company in the basement of the Lock Haven Catholic Church. Swimmers received their awards from the CPYSL championship meet held on February 20th. All swimmers received a certificate with their best individual times from the season.

This was a fun way to end a great season. Again, thank you everyone who helped make this happen!

More Newspaper Coverage!

The local newspaper (The Lock Haven Express) has been covering swimming a lot this year, thanks mostly to our great parents that continue to support their children in this great sport. Here are the two stories. one about a freshmen that's looking to make waves in the future in the pool, and the other is a senior that went out with her best swim ever. I've known Emily a long time, and I couldn't be more proud of her. I just got to know Jordan this year, and am looking forward to seeing what he can do over these next few years!

Michael Suter Memorial Football Scholarship

Swim Team Parents,

Here is a letter from Dana Suter. Her son Jordan is on the high school team and this event is a fundraiser for a schloarship fund that is in Jordan's uncles name. I hope you can consider it!

Dear Coaches, Parents, Booster Members and Family/Friends:

My family is having a fundraiser for the Michael Suter Memorial Football Scholarship and I would like to invite you to attend. This scholarship is presented each year to a deserving Central Mountain football player.

Many of you on this list knew my brother, but I know some of you did not. Please allow me to take a moment to tell you about him. Mike graduated from Lock Haven Senior High School in 1974 and subsequently attended Indiana University. He had many passions in life, including soccer coach, Boy Scout Leader, hunting and cooking; but one of his biggest passions was football. Whether it was playing football in high school and college, or later watching as a fan attending Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers games… my brother just loved the sport! In 2003, at the age of 47, my brother passed away while jogging near his home.

Although the scholarship is awarded primarily for excellence in football, our family also looks for strength of character, academic excellence and responsible involvement within the school and our community.

I hope you will consider joining our family for this worthwhile event!

Lock Haven YMCA Top 5

Lock Haven YMCA all time Top 5 swims for each age group and event can be viewed here.

Summer Swim Team FAQ

Do I have to be a good swimmer to join the team?
All you need to join the LHY summer swim team is be able to make it one length of the pool

Do I need to be a member of the Lock Haven YMCA to be on the team like in the winter?
No. The summer team does not compete in a YMCA summer league, so it does not require a membership. It will be run as a program (just like swim lessons) and will be $55 for members and $70 for potential members. There is an opportunity to get $5 off if you sign up May 11th or May 25th from 6-8 pm

Who will be coaching the summer swim team?
We will have two head coaches, Joel Blesh and Carol Matheney. We are hoping to have a few more as well. More will be posted on this as we have more details.

Do I have to buy a team suit?
We do not require you to buy a suit. In the winter time, we provide a team suit to all swimmers signed up. To keep summer costs down, we just have swimmers use that suit again for meets. We will have other merchandise available when the season gets closer.

Are meets held every weekend?
No. Meets are typically held during weeknights with the occasional Saturday morning thrown in. Meets are substantially shorter in the summertime.

I'm confused? What about the Mill Hall Muskrats?
The Lock Haven team will be replacing the Mill Hall team in the Bald Eagle Swim League.

What if there is no Mill Hall pool this summer?
Its what we're hoping for. In the long range planning of things, if the pool is closed this year that means there will be a pool project, and our community will have a great outdoor facility for the next few decades. If it is open this year, there will not be a project and it will simply be running until it can not be operated anymore. We will plan accordingly. We will have a schedule for both scenarios ready.

I'm going on two vacations this summer, what's the point?
Though summer swim team is just a short season compared to the winter, it is still very valuable when it comes to swimming development. No meets are required, so there is no pressure to skip the vacation to grandma's house in Florida because of a meet.

How many practices does my son or daughter have to attend?
Practice is not mandatory for the summer swim team. We will offer practice 5 days a week (on weeks where we do not have weekday meets). If your child is 10 and Under, it is recommended that they try to make it three times a week.
